From Vienna Airport to the city: which option is right for you?
A side-by-side comparison of the City Airport Train (CAT), the S-Bahn S7, the Vienna Airport Lines buses, regulated metered taxis, and pre-booked private fixed-price transfers — with prices, times and the kind of traveller each one really suits.

Arriving at Vienna International Airport (VIE) in Schwechat, you have five practical ways to get into Vienna proper: the dedicated City Airport Train (CAT), the much cheaper S-Bahn S7, the Vienna Airport Lines express buses, a regulated metered taxi, or a private fixed-price transfer. Each option has its sweet spot — depending on how much luggage you have, how late you land, whether you're alone or with a group, and how predictable you want the price and pickup to be.
This guide compares all five honestly, with current prices and times, then suggests which option suits which kind of traveller. We operate private transfers ourselves — we'll tell you below where another option is the better fit.
Quick comparison at a glance
Door-to-door times below assume the city centre (1st district). Public-transport prices are per traveller; the taxi and the private transfer are per vehicle (typically 1 to 4 passengers, more with a van).
| Option | Time | Price | Door-to-door? | Operates 24/7? | Luggage-friendly? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAT | 16 min | ~€15 single | No (transfer needed) | No (~05:36–23:36) | Yes |
| S-Bahn S7 | ~25–30 min | ~€4–5 single | No | No (~04:30–23:30) | Manageable |
| Airport bus | ~22–45 min | ~€11 single | No | Limited at night | Yes |
| Metered taxi | ~25–40 min | ~€40–50 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Private fixed-price transfer | ~25–35 min | €44 fixed (Economy → 1010) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
CAT — City Airport Train
The CAT is a dedicated, non-stop train running between the airport and Wien Mitte station in the 3rd district every 30 minutes. The journey takes a punctual 16 minutes, and the train has plenty of luggage racks plus on-board Wi-Fi.
What's good: By far the fastest train option. You can also check in your baggage for selected airlines at Wien Mitte the day before.
What's less good: The price is several times that of the S-Bahn. Wien Mitte is not the city centre — you still need a U-Bahn, tram or taxi to most hotels.
Best for: Solo travellers and couples with light luggage staying near U3/U4 lines who value a fast, predictable train ride.
S-Bahn S7 — the local train
The S7 is Vienna's regional rail line and stops at the airport every 30 minutes, continuing through Wien Mitte and Wien Praterstern. Travel time to Wien Mitte is about 25–30 minutes, and the standard Vienna single ticket (~€4) is valid — making it by far the cheapest option.
What's good: Unbeatable value. The same ticket also covers the U-Bahn transfer.
What's less good: It stops at intermediate stations, luggage racks are limited, and at peak times it can get crowded. No service overnight.
Best for: Budget travellers and anyone with light luggage who is comfortable with public transport.
Vienna Airport Lines (express bus)
Several express bus routes connect VIE with key Vienna locations — most notably Schwedenplatz / Morzinplatz in the 1st district and Wien Hauptbahnhof. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes and offer a large luggage hold.
What's good: Plenty of luggage space, well-chosen stops near the city centre, fare in the €11 range.
What's less good: Travel time depends on traffic; rush-hour transfers can take 45+ minutes. You still need a final leg to your accommodation.
Best for: Travellers with bigger luggage who happen to be staying near one of the bus's terminal stops.
Metered taxi at the rank
Vienna taxis are regulated and dispatched from a marked rank outside arrivals. Fares are metered, with surcharges for waiting, luggage and late hours. A ride to the 1st district typically lands in the €40–50 range.
What's good: No advance booking required, door-to-door, 24/7.
What's less good: Price is variable — traffic, route and supplements push it up. Queues can be long after night flight banks.
Best for: Spontaneous arrivals who didn't pre-book.
Private fixed-price transfer
A pre-booked private transfer takes the pickup off your to-do list entirely. You see the final price at booking, your driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall, and you're driven door-to-door.
What's good: Fixed price (no surge, no surprises), professional driver, vehicle choice from Economy to 16-seat Sprinter for groups. Flight tracking means a delay isn't your problem.
What's less good: The headline price is higher than public transport. For a solo backpacker, the S-Bahn is cheaper.
Best for: Anyone who values certainty — late arrivals, families, business travellers, groups, anyone with heavy luggage. Our fixed prices start at €44 (Economy → 1010). See the full price list or our route pages.
Which option for whom?
S-Bahn S7
One ticket, ~€4, takes you to Wien Mitte plus a U-Bahn transfer. Hard to beat for value.
CAT or private
If your hotel is near Wien Mitte, the CAT works. Otherwise, a private transfer saves the last-mile hassle.
Private transfer
Child seats can be requested in advance, no queueing with tired children, fixed price.
Private transfer
Trains stop around 23:30. A pre-booked car is reserved for you. See our late-night guide.
Van / Sprinter
One vehicle, one fixed price. Cheaper per person than five tickets.
