Arriving at Vienna International Airport (VIE) in Schwechat, you have five practical ways to get into Vienna proper: the dedicated City Airport Train (CAT), the much cheaper S-Bahn S7, the Vienna Airport Lines express buses, a regulated metered taxi, or a private fixed-price transfer. CAT — City Airport Train

The CAT is a dedicated, non-stop train running between the airport and Wien Mitte station in the 3rd district every 30 minutes. The journey takes a punctual 16 minutes, and the train has plenty of luggage racks plus on-board Wi-Fi.

What's good: By far the fastest train option. You can also check in your baggage for selected airlines at Wien Mitte the day before.

What's less good: The price is several times that of the S-Bahn. Wien Mitte is not the city centre — you still need a U-Bahn, tram or taxi to most hotels.

Best for: Solo travellers and couples with light luggage staying near U3/U4 lines who value a fast, predictable train ride.

S-Bahn S7 — the local train

The S7 is Vienna's regional rail line and stops at the airport every 30 minutes, continuing through Wien Mitte and Wien Praterstern. Travel time to Wien Mitte is about 25–30 minutes, and the standard Vienna single ticket (~€4) is valid — making it by far the cheapest option.

What's good: Unbeatable value. The same ticket also covers the U-Bahn transfer.

What's less good: It stops at intermediate stations, luggage racks are limited, and at peak times it can get crowded. No service overnight.

Best for: Budget travellers and anyone with light luggage who is comfortable with public transport.

Vienna Airport Lines (express bus)

Several express bus routes connect VIE with key Vienna locations — most notably Schwedenplatz / Morzinplatz in the 1st district and Wien Hauptbahnhof. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes and offer a large luggage hold.

What's good: Plenty of luggage space, well-chosen stops near the city centre, fare in the €11 range.

What's less good: Travel time depends on traffic; rush-hour transfers can take 45+ minutes. You still need a final leg to your accommodation.

Best for: Travellers with bigger luggage who happen to be staying near one of the bus's terminal stops.

Metered taxi at the rank

Vienna taxis are regulated and dispatched from a marked rank outside arrivals. Fares are metered, with surcharges for waiting, luggage and late hours. A ride to the 1st district typically lands in the €40–50 range.

What's good: No advance booking required, door-to-door, 24/7.

What's less good: Price is variable — traffic, route and supplements push it up. Queues can be long after night flight banks.

Best for: Spontaneous arrivals who didn't pre-book.

Private fixed-price transfer
