Vienna districts for travellers: where to stay and what the transfer costs
Vienna has 23 numbered districts, but only a handful really matter for visitors. Here is the short tour: what each tourist-relevant district is known for, which kind of traveller tends to be happiest there, and what a private transfer from VIE costs.

Vienna is divided into 23 numbered districts, the Gemeindebezirke. The 1st is the historic centre; the lower-numbered districts ring it; higher numbers spread out into residential and outer areas. For a visitor choosing where to stay or how to get around, only a handful of districts really matter — and each has a distinct character, hotel scene, and price tag from Vienna Airport.
This is the short tour. For each district we note what it's good for, what the airport transfer costs at our fixed price (Economy class), and which kind of traveller tends to be happiest there.
1010 — Innere Stadt (the 1st)
Vienna's historic core. St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg, the State Opera, the Albertina, the Kärntner Straße shopping mile. Hotels here are typically landmark properties at landmark prices. Walkable to almost every classical attraction.
VIE transfer: from €44 (Economy). Best for: first-time visitors, couples, anyone who wants opera at the doorstep.
1020 — Leopoldstadt / Prater / Messe
Across the Donaukanal from the centre, the 2nd district covers the Prater amusement park with the Giant Ferris Wheel and the Messe Wien exhibition centre. Lots of business hotels around the trade-fair grounds; the area near Praterstern is one of Vienna's youngest, most international neighbourhoods.
VIE transfer: from €44. Best for: trade-fair visitors, families with kids (Prater), travellers on a slightly tighter budget than the 1010 hotels.
1030 / 1040 — Landstraße & Wieden
The 3rd hosts the Belvedere palace (and the famous Klimt collection) plus the Wien Mitte transport hub where the CAT terminates. The 4th has the Naschmarkt — Vienna's most famous outdoor market — and a string of design hotels along the Wiedner Hauptstraße.
VIE transfer: from €44 each. Best for: independent travellers who like neighbourhood feel and quick public transport access.
1060 / 1070 — Mariahilf & Neubau
Hand-in-hand pair on the west side of the Ringstraße. Mariahilf is Vienna's shopping district — the Mariahilfer Straße is the city's main pedestrian shopping street. Neubau is its creative cousin, full of design studios, independent shops and the MuseumsQuartier just across the boundary.
VIE transfer: from €48 (Zone 2). Best for: shoppers, design-minded travellers, anyone who wants café culture and easy walks into the centre.
1100 — Favoriten / Hauptbahnhof
The 10th has long been Vienna's most working-class district and has changed fastest in recent years. The biggest reason to stay here is the Hauptbahnhof — the central train station with international connections — and a cluster of modern business hotels around it.
VIE transfer: from €44. Best for: business travellers continuing onward by rail, travellers prioritising value and modern hotels over baroque setting.
Schönbrunn (1130) and the outer ring
Beyond the central districts, two outliers matter for many travellers: 1130 Hietzing for Schönbrunn Palace and its garden hotels, and 1220 Donaustadt for the Austria Center and the modern Donaucity. Both are well-connected by U-Bahn but a longer journey from VIE.
VIE transfer: from €48 (Zone 2). Best for: Schönbrunn day-trippers (1130) or congress visitors (1220).
